Irish Wake Table

Luckily, this table has not been needed to serve its traditional purpose. Instead, it is used as a spacious console table behind a sofa.

Constructed from American Cherry, this 8-foot long piece was inspired a traditional Irish Wake Table, which served a dual purpose in olden days. Most of the time, the sides were up, and a family would use it as a dining table that would seat the whole family. When a death in that family called for a wake, the sides were dropped, the table is moved to the side of the room, and the casket holding the dearly departed was set atop the center section.

Built for a family that cherishes its Irish heritage, this elliptical dining table has double drop leaves supported by four swinging gate legs. It is primarily used as a spacious console table set up aside a sofa. When entertaining, one side of the table is raised, providing space for hors d'oeuvres or a buffet.
